I would say its a little more similar because a spanish or portuguese speaker can understand a little of each other, whereas a german or english speaker can't understand each other at all.

actually your'e wrong, Brazilian Portuguese is very simliar to Latin American Spanish. (I speak both latin american spanish, and brazilian portuguese). But you are some what correct because spanish in Spain and portuguese in Portugal are VERY different.
