Prospecting and sampling a site for color in Angeles National Forest, 2/28/10. The idea is to hand pan for the presence of gold before you do any serious digging. 1. Find the gold line (inside curve of stream). 2. Locate a gravel deposit. 3. Dig a sample and classify (screen) to 1/4 inch. 4. Pan it and look for color.
I'm at "Pry Bar Gulch" - a small canyon that is dry most of the year. I took advantage of a rainstorm the day before to pan while the small creek was running.

  • It is illegal to mine in the Angeles National Forest. Here you are committing a felony and posting it to YouTube. Good grief.

  • @KurtSahib Um, KS, you should *listen* to what peolpe are telling you. Your video was posted to Facebook and everyone is disgusted at you and your fellow illegal miners. You people have done enough damage to our river, so much so that the National Parks Service is looking at taking over specifically so they can get their armed Rangers in there to clean you illegals out.

Don't blame the messengers. Since you're not on Facebook you can expect more people to condemn your abuse of our lands.

  • how much is it to pan gold at this location?

  • Gold mining is a part of our history as Americans. It should and most likely will continue, well into the generations of our grandchildren and beyond. Gold is as sacred to our people as it was to the peoples before us. With our economy of paper money failing, soon many more will be prospecting our earlier spots for even more gold with even more sophisticated equipment.

  • stop complaining , the old man is not causing any harm, besides he is having fun.

  • @MakesMeAngry I've tried looking all over Google and I can't find any place it says prospecting with a pan and sluice is a crime in the Angeles National Forest. Can you help me find the laws?

  • Your Keene sand and water scoop looks pretty handy.

  • This video is very good and well defined for Geography students like me!!!

  • @MakesMeAngry :) I saw that. I should send you a private email about the California Lottery commercial that is being video taped tomorrow or the next day along East Fork. The commercial producer contacted us. He watched illegals smashing 48 bottles of beer one after another against the rocks in the river while smoking dope, tyhen they left baby diapers and all their trash behind.

But not to worry! The rains and river will wash it all magically away next year no problem. --snort!-- Good grief.

  • @GlendoraLife ROFL! Hey now, Mark isn't that bad, come on. Sure he posts photographs of his ass crack to Facebook but come one! Everybody does it!

  • @GlendoraLife You might want to send him to Arcadia rather than Glendora though both offices will answer questions about illegal mining.

  • @GlendoraLife Yes, all true, I avoid commenting on mining videos in the ANF but yes, I was asked to go look at this one and could. not. stop. myself. ROFL!

What gets me to smile is the sheer act of cluelessness in posting videos of one's felonies on YouTube for all to see. I mean we see people driving drunk or at high speed on Highway 39 and East Fork posting videos to YouTube and then getting arrested when cops view them, but these illegal miners probably feel safe in posting their crimes.
