Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Turdidae

Genus: Turdus

Species: T. merula

The Common Blackbird, Turdus merula, is a species of true thrush. It is also called Eurasian Blackbird (especially in North America, to distinguish it from the unrelated New World blackbirds)[2], or simply Blackbird (in areas where it is the only blackbird-like species). It breeds in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. It has a number of subspecies across its large range; a few of the Asian subspecies are sometimes considered to be full species. Depending on latitude, the Common Blackbird may be resident, partially migratory or fully migratory.[3]

The male of the nominate subspecies, which is found throughout most of Europe, is all black except for a yellow eye-ring and bill and has a rich melodious song; the adult female and juvenile have mainly dark brown plumage. This species breeds in woods and gardens, building a neat, mud-lined, cup-shaped nest. It is omnivorous, eating a wide range of insects, earthworms, berries, and fruits.

Both sexes are territorial on the breeding grounds, with distinctive threat displays, but are more gregarious during migration and in wintering areas. Pairs will stay in their territory throughout the year where the climate is sufficiently temperate. This common and conspicuous species has given rise to a number of literary and cultural references, frequently related to its song.

  • everyone sounds different and they all have their own tree or roof on which they sit and try to seek attention to atract a lady.

  • @rekycheky Very true...

  • @rekycheky we have one in our street and it 'sings' the same few sounds over and over and over and over and over.. its not random sounds it has its own jukebox of quick querks and it plays them over and over and over and over does my fucking head in!

  • @dwarfer777 The blackbird I have has his unique melodies too.

It is one year old now.He imitates exactly what he hears from mp3's (other blackbirds) and it is like he plays it back..For now his melodies aren't very clear and aren't loud .But he has his own ID sounds. Not songs ..just special sounds ,ID sounds he likes to repeat.

  • "I've known a blackbird to sing with as much arrogance and beauty as a world-class opera star, a sound that simply demands your attention. While the nightingale's song is veiled and mysterious, the blackbird's is like a bright river in the sun."

  • Very nice
