A video I edited and shot along with a group of us at Sheffield Hallam University where I did Fine Art - this is early 90's so proper 'slowmo' technology wasn't available - so I used the shuttle wheel - hence the glitches! It fits the subject matter I think.

Intro from the trusty Amiga!

Video edited and arranged: Tim Baker
Cameras by: Tim Baker, Sean Reynard, Paddy Collins, Pete Morris
Music: Sean Reynard and Mark Hadley
Performance arranged by: Paddy Collins

  • I can see you had a lot of fun smashing old monitors. And you were wise to have done it outdoors! I saw 2 of your short pieces on the "For Promotional Use Only" DVD, laughed a lot and looked you up here on YouTube. We smashed a couple of old TVs for our piece on the same DVD, Ohi Ho Bang Bang (someone has ripped it and uploaded to YouTube too), and it was impossible to get rid of all the glass from the black backdrop...

  • @usakousa glad youl liked it and my other pieces. May I ask what DVD? I've never produced a DVD with this on - the Milk Lab yes but only as a portfolio piece I sent to employers - and certainly not with other people's work on it! I still have the source tapes, so unless Paddy or someone else sent it or took a copy (doubtful) or one of the SHU copies for projection got ripped I dunno where'd they get it. /confused.

  • It's rather obvious that this was recorded on VHS lol!

    (whispers) Betamax was better!

  • Actually not - it was recorded on Sony Hi8 and SVHS-C and edited on Sony Umatic edit suite...the glitches are the edit wheel recorded on the other deck. I think I digitised this off a miniDV transfer...

  • And yeah until fairly recently I had Betamax machines and tapes - the cheapest way of showing/recording video ever (got the machines for like 5 quid while the tapes were still being sold, still are as I think old Betacams use them? Might be wrong...)

  • That has turned out really well for what you used to produce it. How did you get that much old stuff? Did you raid a tip?

  • Paddy collected TVs over the 3 years at University...amazing how many discarded TVs are about!

  • Aargh! Idiot me (who doesn't know how to use YouTube)!! Sorry!

I was following links from raghard's channel and ended up here. As he was obviously involved in this project, I didn't check who'd uploaded this clip, before commenting. 1000 apologies!

I've now watched some of your other videos - unfortunately many are not available in Germany due to music copyright issues - and enjoyed them anyway.

  • Beetamax machines and tapes are strill popular on sites such as eBay

I've got four Betamax machines - a Sony C7 (huge breeze block of a thing), Sanyo VTC5000, Sanyo VTC5150 and a Sony HF-950 (or whatever it is.)

    The 950 kicks VHS's arse!!!

and I'm hopefully gonna study at Sheffield hallm from this September!

  • A lot of that old stuff now would actually be rather collectable. Then, mostly not.
