Hundreds of thousands of people living along Japan's eastern coast are preparing for what authorities say is a tsunami heading towards them. The massive undersea quake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, hit Samoa and American Samoa, which is nearly 5,000 miles away from Japan.
Volunteers in many of Japans low-lying ports are closing huge metal tsunami barriers, schools and residents are being evacuated to higher ground and fishermen are bringing their ships back to port.
While Japanese schools regularly prepare for tsunamis, the children say its frightening when its the real thing.
"It's scarier than our usual drills.
"We're waiting out the tsunami and having our classes here."
Authorities across the country have warned people to stay off beaches and ports, and find safety on higher ground.
"We were calling out to all the fishing tourists and telling them to leave the port immediately."
Japan's Meteorological Agency is warning locals to remain vigilant, warning that a tsunami is still highly possible.
