I bought "Velma", a wonderful Dean VX "flying V" style guitar, awhile back...and I discovered that I could get a great, sweet, chunky "Carl Wilson/1962 Fender Jaguar" tone with her like Carl got on those great Beach Boy records like "Wendy" and others....
Velma and I invite you to come along and musically "ride the curl" with us. Enjoy....
Equipment used: "Velma", my Dean V-X guitar, Fender Frontman 25R amp

  • Wow David you rock buddy that was a great instrumental so reminded of all those great surf songs of the early 1960s loved it great song great performance thank you from Phil .

  • @rockingphil58 Thanks! I was hoping I could create something that had an authentic "sound of 1963"...and oddly enough, I got it from a "hard rock style" guitar!

What I try to do is come up with something new and interesting, something different than others are doing. Very few people play surf rock on YouTube.

I am so glad that you liked this! Your response really made my day when I saw it. I really appreciate it.

  • cool to hear this guitar used for something other then metal...i just aquired one of these through a trade and man while its really comfortable to play the pickups are really trebley and high gain.....not a very versatile guitar so im amazed yours sounds they way it does...must just be Velma! lol

  • @rockizdead22 That was a fun part of this video...to take a guitar totally out of its usual context and use it for something nobody would ever imagine it used for. I thought it was really convincing! lol I've done that before...it was really a hoot to use a Telecaster for metal, lol...

Velma is an older Dean...could be that the pickups aren't quite as hot as yours. I had thought about a Duncan Jazz/Distortion pickup combo on Velma, but I'm kinda glad I didn't change them out.

  • @westpoint64 yea if i keep mine i think im gonna change the pickups to the duncans you mentioned! i want some pickups that are more versatile...i really wanna keep the guitar because the neck is super smooth and i have always loved the V style guitars

  • @rockizdead22 V style guitars do seem a bit lighter than other designs, and the shape lends itself to great access up the neck, your hand can grab any note right up the scale.

I forgot to mention that one thing that helped smooth Velma's sound on this video was that I had the pickup selector switch in the middle position. Try that on your 'V' and you may notice a difference. Middle position gives a nice compressed midrange 'chunk' like you hear on Buddy Holly and Beach Boys hits.

  • Pretty good, man. Another great example of using a guitar meant for something else (or being told it's for something else) and doing something really wild!

  • Very cool David ! This guitar has a wonderful sound ! Great play ! Karen :-))

  • @Catfisheyeballs I suppose that's what Velma and I were trying to do....make this tune go and to stay on "the wave" as long as possible. I love playing surf rock. It's a fun genre of music that not many people on here do. Thanks for watching!

  • @deltahotel1 It's good to be back. I'm glad you really like hearing surf rock from me. I like the fact that it is a rather distinct genre of music that isn't done by that many people on YouTube. The Dean VX guitar I'm using ("Velma") lent itself well to surf music, so I sort of came up with some simple riffs that hopefully have the sound of 1963 in them.

I can relate to the "YouTube hiatus" too. I was gone for awhile, myself. It's good to come back to good friends like you, now that I'm back.
