Maher is a non-profit organisation, founded by Sr. Lucy Kurien in 1956. It is situated in Vadhu Budruk, a village in the Pune-district, Maharashthra, India.
It's objectives are:
- To give shelter to destitute women and children by establishing centers at various places.
- To provide for all the basic needs in such centers.
- To arrange training for women, children, youth and if need be for men too.
- To make efforts for finding jobs for women, children, and youth and if need be for men too.
- To promote, execute and encourage schemes of social upliftment with the express purpose of the betterment of society at large and for the establishment of a consciousness of social ethics, morality and basic ethical values.
Irrespective of their religion and caste, all are welcome, treated equally and given the freedom to practice their faith. All festivals are celebrated with the same gusto. Be it Diwali, Id, Christmas or Budh Purnima.
With over 124 employees, Maher has its presence in over 85 rural communities around Pune. There are 21 Balwadis or kindergartens, 5 tuition classes, 17 Bal Sadans, 2 crèche and close to 184 self help groups.
Today Maher operates in 80 rural communities around Pune and has taken under its umbrella several hundred women and children.
