Amazing Grace was written by John Newton (1725 - 1807). It first appeared in the hymnal he provided wrote named "Olney Hymns", published in 1779. In this form, it had six verses. Amazing Grace has been sung to various melodies, but most often to New Britain.
Some time later, a verse from "Jerusalem, My Happy Home", a song appearing in "A Collection of Sacred Ballads" begun to be sung with it. This hymn book was written in 1790.
Amazing Grace is written in a common meter (4.3.4.3). As such, it can be sung to many melodies, including "House of the Rising Sun" - try it.

Nicely done. Rarely hear the original 6 verses these days. Like your melody too.
