@DonNoypi There is another Kanji for the color red, it's 赤 so you'd just write that instead of the hiragana for aka.

I actually don't really understand some things: at first: is it the case, that it doesn't really matter what the On and Kun reading is because they both would be used the same way? could I just memorize both "translations" (Kanji->sound) together and mix them up without caring? and is there a practical reason why the Kanjis are still in use? to me it makes the appearance, that they don't really shorten the sentences in contrast to only hiragana, do they? :)

@japanesepod101 sumimasen..does mabushi also mean bright? does it have a different kanji?

@flamebagh Yes, "mabushii" also means bright (to the point of being blinding), and it is written like this: 眩しい.
