have you tried dripping a bit of oil under the d-pad?

Interesting idea. What kind of oil would I get? And I'd have to be super careful not to damage the circuit board and what not.

I think the issue is that the buttons are hitting each other or getting stuck on one another. I have the same phone and sometimes it does that. cheap keypad. Thats the only things that ruins this phone.

Nope, that's definitely not it for me. If I old the left d-pad button, then gently apply pressure on the left side of the right soft key/C button, you can feel the underlying material "stick" to the bottom. Then, when you let go and it comes back up, it's as if it's "pealing" itself off (because it's not sticky enough, perhaps?), and that's when you hear the sound. I can always just buy the $60 replacement button + keypad assembly, or wait until someone switches their parts to the black version.
