The bleakness of life in Somalia is not prejudiced; everyone endures the pain of struggle. However some suffer more than others, I have met street children that are addicted to glue, khat and other drugs. As a means of dealing with their harsh realities they often sedate themselves. With no family to protect them they stick together in groups and look out for one another. They roam and live on the streets, and beg for food and money to survive. At times they resort to stealing, that is if they can get away with it, or they resort to fighting other street children for what they have.
The month of Ramadan is about counting our blessings, giving back and banding together in solidarity with our brothers and sisters that are struggling. We can all agree that children are among the most vulnerable groups, and when they are neglected, it's an unspeakable tragedy that is a testimony to that fact that we have forgotten our very own.
Please take time to view the images of the thirty boys I met during my trip to Somalia, and please join me in an effort to remember them this Ramadan. The funds collected will be sent to the children to put a smile on their face during Eid. Although I wish to do more, this is a humble start.
