Doing Deaf Differently. Learn about how Hear Indiana, a chapter of AG Bell, can support you on your journey with hearing loss. For more information, please visit: www.HearIndiana.org.
I also resent Patty Spitler's negative framing: "Thanks to Hear Indiana, no one needs to suffer in silence anymore." Pure oralist propaganda. Most of us do NOT "suffer in silence." A fair-minded discussion of "options" and "choices" would include American Sign Language. I bet the Youth Leadership Camp kids sign to each other when the grownups aren't around.
Phony baloney. This was obviously done from a script, and carefully rehearsed. If Hear Indiana wanted to showcase Drew's "listening and spoken language" skills, an unscripted, spontaneous situation would have been more convincing. But the oralist movement has long used tactics of deception to "impress" the public. This was employed, notoriously, at the Congress of Milan in 1880.
I am a DEAF individual that uses ASL. I am perfectly happy, I do not live in a sad world of silence. Deafness is not a "birth defect". I know plenty of happy, successful Deaf people. Oral method did not work for me, later in life I was able to learn how to speak. However that does not improve the effectiveness of the communication with hearing people. There are often communication barrier and misunderstanding, no matter how hard you try to train a child to speak and hear
AG Bell is Deaf people's HITLER. He wanted to wipeout Deaf people. I am Deaf, and an ASL user. Deafness is not a "birth defect" I am normal, intelligent, happy person. I do not live in the sad world of Silence like she claims us Deaf people do. I can speak, but there are often language barrier, communication misunderstanding. As you can see, I am capable of writing English. ASL has helped me better understand and learn in school.
Alexander Graham Bell was very fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). I want to find and show a film of him and his signing in front of camera so Hearing people can learn and experience ASL. Unfortunately, Alexander Graham Bell created, labelled, and against American Sign Language. All Spoken Language CAN'T replace any Signed Language at all. For Deaf community, we seriously need over 50 chapters in US to educate and promote ASL and Writen English as dual languages.
OMG! Not every child is able to accomplish this. Not every child has these opportunities. There is still A LOT of misleading and misguided information out there about DEAF people. Being hard of hearing is a completely different animal. As a deaf person using ASL, can talk /interact with hearing people doesn't mean I am able to HEAR!
"Hearing loss" -- a totally different category of people than deaf and hard of hearing. Hearing people who lose their hearing -- I'm really sorry for them. But they are not deaf people . Those of us born this way are not "suffering" . We are not "unhappy". We are not embarking on "some kind of journey". Most of us are not "suffering in silence" -- that is totally a hearing person (including a hearing person losing his hearing) perception and is WRONG.
I am not against CIs just the perception that the Deaf suffer in silence. They don't. Or I should not generalize. . . many don't. The boy was reading his part. That's Ok, but he really didn't come up with that all on his own. I wish everyone Deaf would get along and stop putting each other down.
This is so stupid and uneducated. I'm so sorry for families who fall for this horrific propaganda.
