  • lets get real now.ND was great for his time but i would not put him in the top 5. now maybe he would be in my top 8

  • Get real now you say...I for one don't appreciate your claim to superior knowledge. You certainly have the right to your opinion, but you don't have the right to rudely state that others must "get real now." I'm not going to allow a debate of the reasons why or why not Native Dancer belongs in the top five, that sort of thing has happened too many times on other videos, and I don't want that to tarnish this video.

    Peace.

  • I think many people forget about Native Dancer when the question of who was the greatest of all time. No offense to Dark Star, but Native Dancer was a horse of immense talent. His offspring have more than made up for his Derby defeat!!!

  • I agree. I feel Native Dancer belongs in the top 3 or 4, at the very least.

His loss in the Derby is was marred by a bad trip and Dark Star being able to run loose on the lead.

The way that loss has been talked up as a black mark is laughable. If anything, Native Dancer showed just how great he was to almost snatch the win away from Dark Star. No disgrace there in the least. He was obviously much the best that day, and would have won had he been afforded a good trip.

    Thanks for the comments.

  • i didn't see man o war....but the greatest horse i ever saw in a race is native dancer, it's a shame this horse was bumped around twice and by the time dancer was clear out of trouble the horse didn't have enought time to beat dark star and lost the only race of its career by a nose in the kentucky derby

  • Native dancer is and was no doubt one of the most impressive of all time. on the track and in the breeding shed. And has contributed immencely in bettering the breed as a whole. you go the gray ghost of sagamore.

  • My horse is related to Native Dancer! :D

  • I can without a doubt agree that ND should be considered one of the top....but I'm inclined to my own opinion, I just don't see him in the top 5. I'm not particularly fond of the amount of inbreeding that has become a product from this horse, but that's probably my only dislike, other than that I'd say he'd be in the top 10 somewhere.

  • @cf1970 Definitely its so annoying, everytime native dancer is mentioned its his loss in the kentucky derby thats the focal point. he was one of the greatest racehorses and sires of all time and prob the most underated. absolutely fantastic and beautiful horse whos progeny are winning everything in europe and his grandson is the highest ever rated european post war horse. check out seabird his accelaration and ease at which he eats up the ground in front of him is just like his grandad.

  • When I first started reading about the history of American horse racing Native Dancer was the only horse that people considered worthy of mentioning in the same breath as Man O' War. Since then there has been a odd fall off in the public's opinion of the great horse. I think it may have something to do with the sport become speed obsessed; come from behind horses don't (and strategically shouldn't) consistently post fast times. Native Dancer - three great years in a row - one of the best.

  • Native Dancer is my mare's great grand-daddy!

  • Native Dancer is one of my all time favorites. I was so excited when I found out my horse has him *on his papers*!! He's my horse's great grandsire. :)

  • I never got to see him run but I was privy to his "mating" when later he was in stud. He was the highest paid stallion in the world then.. $25000 for a live colt guaranteed. Remember that at that time, $25000 was hugely more than it is today. Anyway it was fascinating. After the "teaser" ascertains that the broodmare was in heat, Native Dancer is led to her side. Even though he is mated twice a day during this season, he still knows that he is KING. He foals have been very successful.

  • My thoroughbred, Say Hi To, is Native Dancer's great-great-great grandson, through Raise a Native, Mr. Prospector, Woodman, and his sire is High Cascade.

  • cf1970 Hey thanks for posting this video. What a Tribute to Native Dancer!

    The Grey Ghost rules!

  • @DANCERS1FAN Had he had more time between races, I would say he would of posted a race record never to be beaten ever. 30-40 days inbetween races, who knows what he would of gone on to achieve.

If this race had been another 4 strides Native Dancer would of won! no question about it. Shame about the trouble on the bend! Think thats where he lost the race!
