A video I made for Dropkick Murphy's ballad rendition of The Fields of Athenry. It's a tribute version, done for a soldier that died in Iraq.

Info:

This is a ballad version of the song so its slower than the original DKM version. It's slightly modified as a dedication for a soldier who died in Iraq. Sgt. Andrew Farrar (the soldier) was a long time Dropkick Murphy's fan whose last wish, in a letter he wrote to his wife, was that DKM play the "Fields of Athenry" at his funeral if he died in combat. DKM accepted his request and played it while his coffin was being carried into the church.

  • It is a beautiful song....very deserving of a young Marine. I wish the best for his family. Thank you for sharing it with us. Proud 4th generation American-Irish Soldier who fights for his brothers and to uphold a long tradition. Those who understand will, the rest of you will never know.

  • By the way, Sgt. Farrar was NOT a soldier, he was a MARINE!!!! Soldiers belong to the Army, not the Marine Corps!!!

  • I knew Sgt. Farrar....he was my first squad leader in 2nd MP Battalion Alpha Company when I arrived in Camp Lejeune, NC in March 2004. He was an outstanding Marine!!!

  • @Bhouncer Give it a rest, boy

  • @Bhouncer You make a good point about the history of the song, its is a bit of a contradiction. But going to the lengths of recording a song for a fan who has passed, and they didn't make any money from it, is quite a gesture. I wouldn't call it disgraceful

  • @ollyg85 Because FOA is about those who suffered at the hands of colonial imperialists. Singing it for a soldier who was part of an army that invaded another country is ironic to say the least.

  • @Bhouncer To honour the death of a fallen soldier? Why is that disgraceful?

  • Disgraceful use of the song. Seems like some don't know the history behind the song.

  • I cry like a baby when I watch this. I know "Last Letter Home" and it tears me up.

  • @BarryBurtonfan give them a break this one time, will ya? We all know the difference.

  • What a moving version of this beautiful song. Thank you for sharing it.

My sympathy for the family of Sgt. Andrew Farrar, who died in the service of his country. May he rest in peace.
