Remembering Those We've Lost (Matthew Shepard)

This video was produced for The Tunnel of Oppression held at The University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Spring of 2007. It's a tribute presented by the Gay/Straight Student Alliance of UAB.

Pictures of Hate & Hope are presented to the music of Sarah McLachlan's Angel along with the closing title song from Brokeback Mountain, The Wings. An excerpt from Dennis Shepard's statement before the court at the sentencing of Aaron McKinney is also included.

That crime was SICK. It still is. I don't believe it even happened. People are so close minded, so unwilling. They're people, some of the most wonderful ones out there. I cry every time I think of what happened to Matthew.

All those who THINK they know about the scriptures and yet spew venom towards Gays are committing blasphemy and will surly burn quicker than others.

Dennis Shepard spoke with such passion yet with quiet dignity & one would have to be without a heart to NOT feel his pain.The two young men who attacked Matthew didn't do it in 'God's name'.In fact I believe they didn't do it in anyone's name.They attacked him simply because they could & they believed they'd get away with it,that few people would care! How wrong they were,but at such a great cost to the Shepard family! Requiescat In Pace,Matthew.
