This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the various consoles I own.

This is played on the PS2 with texture smoothing and fast loading on.

I've had this footage on my hard drive for months, so I finally decided to upload it.

The PS1's weakest genre was the beat 'em up genre. In fact, the system of the PS1's generation that had the best beat 'em ups by far was the Saturn. The only two big ones of note on the PS1 were Fighting Force (which is fun, but pretty standard), and Gekido. Gekido is my favorite of the two.

The game comes off as relatively generic, but it does try to make the beat 'em up genre more interesting. The paths of play change every time you play the game, there are new characters to unlock, and you earn new moves and combination over time. It even has a four player fighting mode (for those of you with a multi-tap) where you and three of your buds can go at it with characters you unlock in the game.

Overall, it's not the greatest beat 'em up ever devised, but it's definitely the best one the PS1 has to offer IMO. If you're a fan of beat 'em ups, and still have an interest in the PS1, then check Gekido out.

The load times can be relatively long and frequent as well. In the vid I've even got the PS2's fast loading on, and they still take some time to wait through. Also, if you're not a fan of the genre, this game won't change your mind at all.

Gekido is only available on the PS1.

  • If this is a 'gem', how would you describe fighting force?

  • @Ghostrider623 Fighting Force was fun, but pretty standard for a beat 'em up. I got it for Christmas 1997 because I really wanted a Streets of Rage kind of game. It in no way shape or form touches SoR, but it's still decent.

  • @Scouter9001 This game doesn't suck, you just do. If I were you I'd get over that.

  • @teh2Dgamer perhaps i sounded too harsh personally i played the streets of rage series before this and directly compared this game to that one so i thought wow this game sucks but if you like it i guess its ok

  • @Scouter9001 Well all beat 'em ups suck when compared to SoR IMO, but just because you like one game better doesn't mean other games in the same genre aren't worth playing. They may not do it better than your favorite game in the genre, but as long as they put their own spin on the formula, and make it their own, they are still worth taking a look at.

  • @retarguus Gee, I guess that's why this video isn't called "Teh mozt awesomust Gekido pleighing of all time!" dumb fuck. If you're so fucking spectacular, let's see your vids of the game. Until then STFU, and you're blocked for being a jackass.

  • I loved the shit out this game. Really wish NAPS team or well...ANYONE would re-release this game but with u know, better graphics and maybe game mechanics cause this game WAS THE SHIT! U don't see that many beat'em ups now adays..

  • @Scouter9001 I agreed, i have the game, it sucks. Repetitive, casual 2d fighting game.

  • After all these years, they still haven't gotten the sound to play in the emulator versions :(

  • GOD I remember how bad this game was it's still probably my favourite ps1 game of ALL TIME due to co-op man no matter how bad this game was with all it's fucking loading times shitty aiming playing it with a friend made it SO MUCH FUN sound track was great too i really wish they would remake it and make it some what better

  • I've been looking for this game since I played it at my friends back in 2002/2003.. thanks!

  • This game is what made me found out about Apartment 26.

  • Travis,Tetsuo,Angela,Michele,Uchi,Kobuchi,Kintaro,Akujin,Gorilla, and the kuji e koji brothes,i think they are the most freaking awesome characters in a beat em up game

  • i remenber that game by heart,it could be fraking awesome if they do a remake of tha one on next gen or at least in ps2 when he still was cool.

At least for me,this one is the best beat em up in the ps1,i wonder how this stuff coulda be remodeled,in a kind of graphic like in ultimate spider man. Man,Gorilaa and Akujin in kind of graphic like that could be freaking more monmsters.Just could be great like this. And some repairs on the story, new moves, and done

  • Funfact: the music featured fat boy slim songs!
