once got a mate's falcon wagon AUII stuck on a muddy gravel/dirt backroad. Had to put it in reverse and floored it up to 2000 rpms (the dial went nearly to 80 k's) before it got unstuck. Never under-estimating a dirt road again after its been raining ;)
I know, an epic fail on my part hehe.

if its only one wheel spinning(no limited slip diff) the trick is pull the hand brake on a bit that will give the effect of slightly locking the diff and many times you can drive straight out.
