The Tango remains a potent symbol for Argentina and the path to a troubled past.

In the Plaza De Mayo mothers release coloured balloons to commemorate the children who disappeared under the Generals of the 70s. Others harp back to the memorabilia of the 20s when Argentina was a world power. In suburban halls, teenagers tango to recordings made more than 50 years ago. A 24 hour TV station plays nothing but Tango - spangled dresses, fancy footwork, mirrored dance halls. Madonna's film about 'Evita' revives the antagonism between rich and poor. The rich still see her as a money grabbing whore, her 'shirtless ones' hail her as a saviour. Under President Carlos Menem, inflation is down and McDonald's restaurants grace the streets. But many in the shanty towns have missed out on the economic miracle. A colourful feature on Argentina past and present.
