From: News dot Cnet dot Com June 12, 2008: "The company chose from a collection of 10,000 strains of algae and used molecular biology to enhance certain traits. Specifically, company engineers enhanced certain algaes' ability to make sugar and, through their enzymes, to ferment sugar into ethanol." In my view this is potentially a very dangerous situation. Yes, mother nature will adapt when this FrankenAlgae gets released into our waters, but how will she do it? This water could make you drunk!
This is bad! They are implementing this through genetic manipulation of algae. The company said; "Most algae have a really tiny ability to make ethanol, and we've enhanced it greatly" This is potentially VERY DANGEROUS to the biosphere. We know it is only a matter of time until this genetically altered algae is released into the environment through the air. It will reproduce itself. Algae grows quickly. The ethanol produced could very easily poison all the water systems where the algae lands.
