i consider 'the mother' to be one of the most frightening movie characters of all time...this movie is just perfect...

Damn Sam Loomis was a stud! I'd tap that-even mother could watch. Getting turned on as I type.

It's Bernard Herrmann's music which keeps you watching, since nothing very much happens in the first half hour so, apart from Janet Leigh absconding with a lot of money. But the music tells you that something terrible *is* going to happen, which it does when she steps in the shower, so that's why you keep watching.
