  • The first time I heard this song I was listening to radio, locked in a cell in Portlaoise Jail, which is a short while up the road from the eponymous Cluain Meala.

It was a hot summer evening and I could see, from my window, part of the normal life of the town going on around me.

I was a fan of the Dubliners and Luke long before that but the circumstances of my first hearing of the song brought home to me the continuing relevance of songs born out of struggle.

  • From the photo of Luke as a young rake, and in the short time before he passed at the age of 43 - he attained immortality in the folk world.

  • Heart rending,

  • @damodamodamo2 At the minute it's not to be got anywhere, The British Library Archives had a copy so I emailed them but they couldnt give me a copy because of copyright issues, Don't know what happened but they dont seem to have it anymore.

  • @kellyoneill Luke Kelly The Deserter....Ye wouldnt know where i would find that would ye? cant find it on here :)

  • @Apemanwithcalculator ....Most definitely agree and I'm trying to think of that old bushy bearded and much castigated Jewish philosopher from Germany who said in so many words "However, the difficult bit is in trying to change such things"

  • @bilstew there are so many social reformers of these isles forgotten - radicals and renegades and yet most of TV has dramas about the eltist aristocracy, makes me sad !

  • Profound words steeped in history....Let us not forget those gone before us who paid dearly in their struggle for the rights of man...Let us honour their memory, their deeds, and likewise as in THEIR struggle do the best WE can. Regards from the Teddy Bears head..

  • @MrPeteofile hmm interesting reply lol
