  • You can also use any type of oil if shit really does hit the fan, olive oil , vegetable oil , animal fat

  • @deussolinvictus A dollar?! That's a total rip-off, I'd rather just rot in the dark!

But seriously, this is true -- the candles don't smell like night-blooming jasmine, but they do work.

  • They make self-generating lanterns (you turn a crank to build the power it runs on).

They also have portable solar panels with attached outlets -- you could put it in a windowsill and plug things into it. Good enough for a small fridge, or a lamp and, oh, say, a fan or small radio. You can get them cheap for 150, quality for about 250.

Oil lamps burn through fuel like a Lamborghini, and they are a huge fire hazard.

  • after the electric went off here in Ohio a few years ago I went to garage sales and flea markets and bought old kerosene lamps and lamp oil. I don't want to be in the dark again., (if you get these buy extra parts for them, too).

  • @deussolinvictus Yankee Candles burn much longer than 5 hours, but then again, they cost a lot more than a dollar (but they smell so good) :)

  • Dollar Tree locations have 5 hour emergency candles in a 6 pack for.... ... say it with me...............a dollar. I've tested them and they do in fact burn around 5 hours and work great.

  • I bought lots of tea lights at dollar store. They don't give off much light but each one will last a couple of hours.

  • Zelda oil lantern. I need to find better lamps.

  • You listen to Rammstein? lol Crazy music but good! Hopefully you bought the oil that doesnt smoke. I bought the wrong kind the first time. Been thinking of getting a new lamp and oil too. Also did you know about cotton balls soak in petroleum hold a flame?

  • Demcad, we just found out about coconut oil and tea tree oil (essential oil) they are a little pricey, but extremely versatile. Check them out
