The ending was in reference to Terry Alexander's character John (the pilot) saying he found all the charts, graphs, & catalogues of everything people felt was so important to keep track of. He stated it was part of their tombstone, & they should escape & teach their kids to never dig it up. But, as a scientist, she can't leave well enough alone & is, in turn, repeating the same mistakes as those who came before her. It adds to the social commentary Romero has throughout the whole film.

This film did not age well, what made the 2 first films of the saga interesting is lost with all the overacting silly accents and the contrived social commentary, honestly could those soldiers be any more cliche with their horrendous laughter lol.
