I like specially to play this english traditional song: "Once I had a Sweetheart". I know it by Pentangle, Massimo Santantonio and Angelo Branduardi. The arrangement, for fingerstyle guitar, is mine, but in this rendition there is a lot of all and three!... I play guitar - a McIlroy A25 - with Dropped D tuning, one tone down.

Lyrics:

Once I had a sweetheart and now I've got none
Once I had a sweetheart and now I've got none
He's gone and leave me, he's gone and leave me
He's gone and leave me in sorrow to moan

Last night in sweet slumber I dreamed I did see
Last night in sweet slumber I dreamed I did see
My own precious jewel, my own precious jewel
My own precious jewel sat smiling by me

But when I awakened I found it not so
But when I awakened I found it not so
My eyes like some fountain, my eyes like some fountain
My eyes like some fountain with tears overflowed

I'll venture through England, through France and through Spain
I'll venture through England, through France and through Spain All my life I will venture, all my life I will venture
All my life I will venture on watery main

(English anonymous - XV century)

  • Dude, your guitar playing is amazing. I wish I could really learn this song. Do you think you would have the tabs for it?

  • Hi @IllegalTragedy,

many thanks for your appreciation!... unfortunately it's an arrangement that I found by ear and I have no tablature! I'm sorry... If you are interested in similar things as well let me know: if I can, I will help you with pleasure!

    Best wishes

  • How long did it take you to get your fingerpicking down to a point that you didn't have to think about it? I've been playing for 7 months and my chord transitions are perfect, including barre chords, but I can only travis pick. Would love to get into something this detailed...but wonder if I'm out of my depth. :)

  • hi @van1980,

don't worry... If you love a piece, you must play it better as you can!... and then you'll see that it will lead you to where it wants!!...

All the best and good playing!...

  • Awesome man. This is such a haunting, sweet English tune. I'm planning to pickup fingerstyle purely for stuff like this and Scarborough Fair etc. Just have to stop biting my fingernails!!

  • Hi @bobblefish,

yes, of course this is a good way for stop biting your fingernails!... ahahah!... It's true: these traditional pieces are really magic!...

    All the best,
