this most likely works by having a Chemical catalyst built into the Container that brakes water down into Hydrogen and oxygen. this wouls explain what it does need a power source to brake down the water and why it can only work for 30 days ( after that the catalyst would be to degraded to work any longer)
personaly I'm not a fan of these because the catalyst used is not reusable or renewable and sometime toxic. all in all not really a good idea.

If that's the case i wouldn't mind one.
I might add that the reason the cartridge will only last for 30 days is because there are other chemicals involved for the process...
