@shinyshinysilver You can cut off the jam to prevent the other jammer from scoring points. You can also keep the jam going (up until two minutes), say right before the point where the other jammer is approaching the pack, in order to run down the clock. Modern derby is like an onion. Under every layer of strategy there's usually another one.

If you are the lead jammer, what is the benefit of ending a jam? Is it just to keep the other jammer from scoring points, or are there any other reasons?

cool vid, but skating in the wrong direction on the track isn't a penalty - skating in the wrong direction to execute a block is.

Good simple explanation. I'm blogging about Roller Derby in Brisbane, Australia right now and got pointed to this vid by one of the people from the Sun State Roller Girls (I don't know much about it).
This vid is a great explanation so that someone could go to their first bout and they'll have an idea of what to look for so they know what's going on.
