  • I don't know when they changed their headlights and number boards, but in 1987, all 600 series still had low mounted headlights + number boards. Some even had AEM7 style headlights and pantographs.

  • You're right. It is the Crescent.

  • i miss the shapes of those coaches and the phase 3 colors... such nice heritage coaches... there was one in Hamburg, NY for a time, you were able to walk around in it, they took it out from the yard there some time back.

  • Ah, the mighty E-60

  • @ACLTony Well that doesn't mean one can't be restored. I have my eyes on 603. It has the cab signals and apparently the 120 mph gearing after it was overhauled until the decision to scrap the fleet was passed. Amtrak's 50th anniversary is in 9 years. The sad thing is that while an E60 could be restored the GG1s will be very difficult and even more expensive then an E60 restoration. It would be cool to see a GG1 pulling P70s and an E60 pulling long passenger trains again. :)

  • @kmothersil -I had to dig up my photos of the trip. It was E60 #956. I also remember hearing, what to me, was the odd melody of its horn. I learned years later that the E60 horns were modified by Nathan Air Chimes, at Amtrak's request, and were call "Nathan P-01235" as one of Amtrak's managers wanted the E60s to have a unique sounding horn. I'm disappointed the E60s are gone, but from what I've read two have been saved. One that was in the NJTransit colors, the other in Amtrak.

  • @ACLTony So they did hit over a 100 mph?! That's good to know that at some point in their careers they hit over 100 mph. What was the road number of the E60 that you rode on that day?

  • I rode a 15 car long Silver Meteor behind an E60 before the speed restrictions were imposed. What an enjoyable ride. The conductor told me that we were clocking 110 mph! Those E60s had some serious muscle and in my opinion they were handsome looking units.

  • I Wish Amtrak Bring The Heritage Cars Back. They Rode More Comfortable Than Today's Amfleets.

  • Ironically E60 #603 was probably the worst of the group. Specifically known for not being able to make time by NYP's 40 office. I used to run them on the NEC and one day when we couldn't make time (wouldn't make transition) I got called to the office for an explanation. I barely had a few words out of my mouth and the Director asked what engine it was...when I said #603....he laughed and said "Oh, forget it then".

Honestly when you had one that was in good shape they could really pull.
