IMHO, there was a reason that was just as, if not bigger than, Glen's coaching tactics that caused Minnesota to blow a lot of leads during his tenure. Of course, Minnesota wasn't an easy sell for talent to begin with. So, since Glen Mason figured this, instead of believing that he could get some of the best players and going after the studs, he waited around for the leftovers. And, since Glen didn't have as many strong players as he could have had, his players often got tired out early.
A lot of college football fans will point to Glen Mason's tactics on blowing a lot of leads during his tenure and his record against the Big Ten elite like Michigan and Ohio State, but still he didn't do a bad job in Minnesota.
In fact, Mason turned a lot of franchises around during his head coaching tenures: Kent State, Kansas, and Minnesota.
Maybe Glen Mason couldn't have taken Minnesota Football to the next level. However, had he had the benefit of having a beautiful, on-campus stadium, I think he could have recruited much better players and had much better teams.
Oops! I meant Glen Mason! Anyway, considering that football isn't big in the state of Minnesota, and considering that the Gophers played in the Metrodome during his tenure, I thought the job he did was remarkable. People said he couldn't recruit. Well, think about this-how many blue-chippers would want to call the Metrodome home. It is a dull, inside, off-campus venue. This makes for the worst college gameday atmosphere possible. Thank God Minnesota won't have to play there much longer.
That is a shame that Glenn Mason won't be able to coach Minnesota in this new stadium. Although Glenn Mason blew some big leads, I thought he was a fine coach-in fact, one of the most underrated in the land. What he did with Gopher Football was awesome!
