Music written by Jimmy Van Heusen, the lyrics by Johnny Burke. The song was published in 1947. Featured in the Paramount Pictures movie Road to Rio (1947), it was introduced by Bing Crosby and is also associated with his leading lady Dorothy Lamour.

Musical analysis of "But Beautiful":

The original key is G major and has the form A-B1-A-B2. It is usually performed as a ballad.

"But Beautiful" charted four times, all performances by vocalists:

Frank Sinatra (1948, four weeks, topping at #14)
Bing Crosby (1948, with the Victor Young Orchestra, three weeks, topping at #20)
Margaret Whiting (1948, with the Frank DeVol Orchestra, two weeks, topping at #21)
Art Lund (1948, with the Johnny Thompson Orchestra, one week, topping at #25)

The majority of the music on my channel are "standards" and "theatre" songs. The era that spawned the songs I sing are no more. I'm a two hundred million-year-old dinosaur loose in the twenty first century.

  • This is my preferred version of this beautiful song I've just discovered (Even compared to Sinatra .... never thought I'd say that!) Great tone and languid feel in this I suppose homespun recording without the advantage of studio takes and pitch correction Thanks Michael Graham

  • @grahamcmusic thank you, a utuber gave sent this file to me yrs ago and actually i am not sure if it was even ment for vocals, but i gave it a shot. thank u again.

    have an outstanding 2012.

  • @mettanc Thanks Michael You too have an outstanding 2012 Surprised you haven't been headhunted by some record companies - maybe you have I teach singing - and one of the problems I find can occur with good relaxed singing is that relaxation & quality of tone sometime take the upper hand over pitch Worth sorting in a performance I believe - even if it means a bit of tightness Hopefully constructive criticism and perhaps of help Thanks again for such a special performance Graham

  • @grahamcmusic nobody has contacted me and i have been on utube over 5 yrs, but i never joined utube to see if i could be contacted with some sorta record deal. i am shocked people listen really and i agree, relaxed sometimes means lack of pitch or flat etc.....I'm not a vocal virtuoso. There are singer's whose techniques are superior to mine. I don't fully read music.

  • @mettanc You're very modest for the special talent you have There are lots of great musicians - especially singers - who don't read music Seemingly Bruce Hornsby (a favourite musician of mine) sent tapes away for 10 years before he was 'discovered' Glad you enjoy what you do .... even just for the sake of it and to share your talent You have so many appreciative comments ... not surprised! Graham

  • @grahamcmusic if i sang and posted here on utube just to be discovered, that would spoil the whole reason of why i sing or anyone does for that matter- coz they need to express there creative nature, its something we all have in our dna, however not all have found it. let me know when u have posted a video on your channel. michael
