WEST SIDE STORY 50th anniversary celebration. Music by Leonard Bernstein,
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Play by
Arthur Laurents, Choreography and Direction
Jerome Robbins. A landmark musical.
Johnny Mathis is superb in the interpretations of the songs of West Side
Story. He sings SOMETHING'S COMING, MARIA,
and TONIGHT.

  • Maria...the most beautiful record ever made....puts all other versions to shame!!

  • I agree with you. Y also feek he would have

    provided better versions on Something´s

Coming, and Tonight, if he would have recorded

these at Columbia Studiosm where they had the

best arrangers, the best sound equipment, and

the top musicians. When he recorded these 2

songs , he had changed record label. He later

    came back to Columbia.

Hearing Maria for the first time as sung by

    Johnny Mathis is a ¨life altering experience¨.

  • He has a way of doing that. For any song. From any era or genre.

That's what makes him one of the Top 3 male, pop vocalists of the entire 20th Century.

    Period.

  • He recorded "Tonight" at Columbia; it was released on the album "Faithfully" in 1959, the same album "Maria" was cut from as a single.

  • this video made me orgasm prematurely

  • @cybernautev Johnny is a legend, I saw him in person!

  • Many thanks

This includes arguably, the definitive recording of 'Maria'. Between Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole they caused more people to fall in love than any other recording artists - I was one of the many!!!

  • This is great thanks for posting

  • This was a hit record for Johnny Mathis in 1961. I never heard it by anyone else. And I never heard of David Habbin or Ricardo Bernal . WHO are they?

  • A great voice and a nice man! When he was in New York City for a Carnegie Hall concert, he came up to WCBS-FM and was kind enough to allow photographs with all the D.J.'s and the Newscasters. I was one of those Newscasters!

    Johnny--Live Long & Prosper!

  • Altho I also consider Johnny Mathis one of THE best, others have done this song better. Check out David Habbin or Ricardo Bernal on you tube.
