Keepers at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park near Ashford in Kent have welcomed two female cheetahs. The cheetahs, named Messina and Jofane, arrived from Ebeltoft zoo in Denmark.
The southern cheetah is a vulnerable species. It has been estimated that in 1900, more than 100,000 cheetahs were found throughout Africa and Asia. Today around 7,500 -- 10,000 animals remain in the wild. Losses of habitat, conflict with humans, as well as its own loss of genetic variation are the main threats facing the cheetah today.
