In November 1992, a severe snowstorm in southern New Mexico prevented the Artesia Bulldog cheerleaders, students, family, fans and radio broadcasters from attending the championship game against the Kirtland Central Broncos at Kirtland. This championship game was to be played with virtually empty stands on the Artesia side of the field.
With no radio broadcasters there was no way for students, family and fans, stranded back in Artesia to listen to play-by-play or even receive any game updates.
At the time my family & I were visiting my cousin, Keith Megill (the "Sports Voice of Northern New Mexico") in Espanola, NM. Keith received a call with a desperate appeal to make the several hour drive over snow covered roads to Kirtland to broadcast the game for the Bulldogs.
Keith, my son Dustin & I made the journey arriving after the game had already begun. Keith did play-by-play & I did a bit of color commentary. Twelve year old Dustin captured this video of portions of the game. Sadly the tape ran out just before the end of the game, but what a game it was!
For most of the game it was all Kirtland and late in the fourth quarter it was nearly a rout. But then the Bulldogs came storming back, winning the game in overtime! What a game! What a game!
I have never been to Artesia, New Mexico, but I will forever be an ARTESIA BULLDOG FOOTBALL FAN!
