This song is about the very significant Battle of Isandlwana, which took place on 22 January 1879 in South Africa. The day the Zulu empire taught Great Britain why they should respect Africa. This battle was the largest British defeat in Victorian history. I have my own interpretation of this song I am no historian, just an objective African. Unfortunately You Tube does not allow enough characters in a comment for me to give the full translation and interpretation.

The song captures a time when the British got a pasting from another tribe which they thought they could overcome. During apartheid, impi was a rallying cry to those who wanted to overthrow the system.

@MyDwal One of the first movies I ever saw in my life ... was "Zulu" about this event. around 1967. I can't recall much about it... but i'd like to see it again.

Haven't heard this for years! I did have the brilliant Africa shaped picture disc which came with a free copy of Scatterlings of Africa. Wish I'd kept them.
