In una delle più belle storie della musica mai scritte, Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht colloca il musicista romantico in un mondo ideale ove l'arte ha una funzione redentrice, di contro alle brutture del mondo reale sulle quali l'artista non ha alcuna influenza. È a questa idea e a una delle sue incarnazioni -- l'eroe, sia egli
il picaresco Don Chisciotte o il titano di stampo byroniano -- che Richard Strauss rende omaggio quando tra il 1897 e il 1898 compone Don Quixote e Ein Heldenleben: un tema con variazioni il primo (l'eterno ripetersi di avventure e sconfitte dell'eroe di Cervantes); il secondo, una girandola di temi straussiani da Don Juan, Zarathustra, Tod und Verklärung: l'idealizzazione eroica di un autore che di se stesso diceva: "io non sono un eroe... non sono fatto per la battaglia".

In one of the most extraordinary histories of music ever written, Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht set the Romantic musician in an ideal world where Art has a redeeming function, as opposed to the ugliness of the real world the Artist cannot modify. To this idea, and to one of its embodiments -- the hero, either a picaresque Don Quixote or a Byronesque Titan -- Richard Strauss paid homage in 1897-98, with Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben. The first is a theme with variations (depicting the adventures and defeats of Cervantes's hero); the second is a collection of Straussian themes -- Don Juan, Zarathustra, Tod und Verklärung: the heroic idealization of an author who explained: "I am not a hero... I am not cut out for battle".
