Selena had fallen asleep. Nick was staring at the electrocardiogram beside Selena's bed, watching the steady waves of her heartbeat go up and down. He feared that eventually it might not go up and down anymore, but he knew that that moment can be any second now. He pressed her hand against his cheek and felt the touch of her skin. She was so cold and her fingers were bonier than before... the veins had appeared on the back of her hand. He looked at her and saw that she had lost a lot of weight, but she was still as beautiful as ever. He kissed her hand and let the tears flow once more, "Hold on, baby... I'm gonna save you, okay? I don't know how, but I will... whatever it takes... I promise."
"Hmm... Nick..." Selena mumbled in her sleep, it was as though she could hear what he was saying though she was still in deep slumber.
"I love you, Selena..." Nick said. He couldn't tell her that when she was awake. He was still scared and he was still weak. He sighed as the silence of the cold, dark hospital room overwhelmed the atmosphere. Nick felt his eyes slowly closing, but then a ray of light appeared on the doorway.
"Nick?!" Vanessa said as she opened the door.
Nick let go of Selena's hand and stood from his seat. Vanessa put down the bag of groceries beside her then asked, "What are you doing here?!"
"I-I was just checking up on Selena..." he stuttered.
"You sure got some nerve showing up here after what you did." Vanessa said as she crossed her arms. Nick grew silent. "What?" Vanessa said, "Are you just going to stand there?! Get out of here!"
"But she needs me." He reasoned.
Vanessa looked down, "Go now before I call security." She said as calmly as she could.
"I'm not leaving her..." he said, "not again..."
"You're only going to hurt her!" she retaliated.
Nick was insulted, he knew that he has hurt her in the past, but he had no more intention of doing so again. "How could you say that?!" he exclaimed, "You don't know me! You don't know what Selena and I have been through!"
"Well I know what Selena has been through, and what she's not gonna go through again!" she called out the hospital's personnel, "Nurse, nurse! There's an unwanted visitor in my sister's ward!"
"You can't make me leave!" he said as he bent down and held Selena's hand. A group of medical personnel started to enter the room. Selena slowly woke up, "Nick?" she said faintly, "What's going on?"
"Nick was just leaving." Vanessa said.
"What? No..." she whimpered and faced Nick, "Please... please don't leave me, Nick." She begged him.
"I don't want to leave you." Nick told her.
A nurse started to pull Nick away, "I'm sorry, sir, but you have to leave." She said as the others tried to assist her. Nick wasn't letting go of Selena's hand even as his weight was being pulled away by the staffers.
"Vanessa!" Selena yelled with all she could, "Tell them Nick can stay!"
"No, Selena, he can't." Vanessa tried to reason out to her, "You need your rest."
"No!" she exclaimed as she tried her best to break free from the wires that were stuck on her and hold on to Nick.
Vanessa rushed to Selena's side and held her back, forcing Selena to let go of Nick's hand, "Selena!" Nick said as the personnel succeeded in driving him out of the room. Selena continued to hear Nick's cries even as he was being escorted down the hallway.
"He's no good for you, Selena!" Vanessa told her, "He'll only make things worse!"
Selena broke down in tears as her breathing started to get heavier, she felt her heart pounding. She needed Nick.
"Stop it Selena, relax." Vanessa said when she noticed Selena's breaths getting heavier, "Selena, please stop..."
"I-I can't breathe..." Selena managed to let out before she felt that sudden pain that was like a thousand knives piercing through her heart.
"Selena?!" Vanessa yelled as Selena winced in pain, "Nurse! Doctor! Anyone!" she yelled.
A nurse and a doctor entered immediately. The doctor saw Selena's irregular heartbeat pattern on her electrocardiogram. "I'm sorry Mrs. Efron, but you have to leave the room." The doctor said, and Vanessa willingly did so.
She felt herself melting on the corridor as she leaned herself against the wall. Every time she tries to make things right, it just goes wrong.
