Thanks for the captures and locations of the towers. They were originally erected in the 1800's in response to the "Servant Girl Killer" who was a serial killer terrorizing Austin at night. They put up these 17 towers to produce tremendous light coverage to prevent the killer from using the cover of darkness to commit his murders. The original lamps were arc lamps and were incredibly bright. The city has laws in place to prevent removal of the towers today. Very cool and unknown piece of history.

These are very cool structures to see. I'm glad that Austin decided to save them. They are one of a kind. Thanks for sharing :)

do they light these towers at night anymore?

I'm pretty sure they still do. These pictures were taken a little over a year ago, and at 1:00 and 1:47 you can see what they look like lit up. The lights are not really bright, and some needed to be replaced. The one at Zilker Park is no doubt still lit up at night, especially during Christmas when it turns into Austin's artificial Christmas tree as you could see at the end of the vid. Very neato.

@Ele3tricEye They still do. They just aren't that bright, so you pretty much have to stand right next to them to see the action going on up there!
