Today was Carnival Day, the day of judging for the 1st Asia Grow Out competition after a 6 months grow out period (please see V27). As this was a competition first mooted on the Malaysian Koi Forum, judging was done by hobbyists themselves, through a polling system. Apart from the grow out koi, a number of high quality koi were also exhibited at the Carnival. It was a showcase rather than a competition.

The day also marked the official opening of the 1st Asian Pit Stop, Singapore under the Nishikigoi Home of Asia programme.

Kentaro Sakai from Sakai Fish Farm and Daisuke Maeda from Momotaro Koi Farm were present, and an auction were conducted for a number of high quality Sakai and Momotaro tosais as well as several nisais.

  • wow, I noticed some nice koi came out of the growout competition... they come from normal grade tosai right? not bad at all :D

    greetz

  • Hi Steven, some didn't turn out so well. I guess I videod the better looking ones. :-) Also, don't confuse the showcased koi with the Grow Out koi.

  • these are class six koi, right?

  • We don't use the Western system here. We follow the Japanese BU system. In any case, these size classifications don't apply in the case of Grow Out competitions. The Grow Out koi were mostly 40-50cm, in some cases even bigger.

  • im sorry, i didnt realize. learn something new everyday. 50cm, is pretty big, what 19 in? wow. huge fish, so they judge more on color and girth then? anyway, awesome vid.

  • 50cm is about 20" and isn't very big at all for koi. In fact one year old koi only. They can get up to a metre long. Not all the koi in the video were Grow Out koi. Some were show case koi, as I mentioned in the video. The Grow Out koi were judged based on finish.

  • ps I think the Nishikigoi House of Asia is a magnificent project :o I hope something similar can happen in europe as well some day, but it won't be for the near future I"m afraid... Asia has a great koi community, my respects :D

    cheerz

  • hi paul, I didn't confuse em with the showcased showkoi, or there would be a problem with the eye of the breeders than lol but I was talking about the matsunosuke sankes in the beginning, pretty decent fish considering the fact that they are grown from "normal" tosai :D (but maybe they were the better ones :D)

    cheerz
