VERY RARE.r&b Detroit sound....

written in 1949 by Ewan MacColl , a Scotsman living in Salford Lancs , this was made popular by the Pogues. Reputedly written about Salford this is in fact written abaout any Irish town during the emigration days of the 40's where a third of Irish workers uprooted and made their way to the USA via Liverpool , many of whom stayed there , beleiving that the streets of America were paved in Gold , only to find " dirty" towns exsited everywhere....any way enough of the Jackanory this is a great Detroit version hope you enjoy

  • @salfordsredarmy the themes in the song are pretty universal, dude. It can be about any poverty-stricken, bombed out city. Stop being so chauvinistic.

  • Never heard such bulls**t in my life. This song was written by a man born and bred in Salford of Scottish parentage, he wasn't a Scotsman though. And the song is clearly about Salford, it even says in the original 'smelled a Spring on the SALFORD wind', but had to be changed because Salford Council thought it brough bad press to the town and therefore is now 'smelled a Spring on the smokey wind'.

  • i always thought this was about salford

  • interesting some one needs to send this to mike harding to play on his folk show

  • great version but i still prefer the pogues version

  • Spot on mate. i like the Luke Kelly version as well.

    Cheers,

    Sean.
