I think they did a great job with the song. We sing their anthem all the time, I really don't have a problem with them singing ours. Especially since they did a really good job with it. Big ups to the solo at 2:05.

I think The Black National Anthem glosses over the real issues of your community - 80% of all black babies raised in single mom families. more teen black boys in jail than in college, our prisons bursting at the seams with you. "Cops" could not be shown without you. You hold up more convenience stores than all other races combined, You destroy your neighborhoods with gangs and graffiti. You are filled with self-hate. You are a bitter and dangerous race. Europeans and Asians hate you/

this is good

i dont think any of us wrote this song...so let them sing it..half of ya'll prob. dont even know all the words anyway.
-
I've never heard the extended version. Well done! Brought a tear to my eye!

@keepingitreal15 And another thing, focus on making yourself great and doing the best with the gifts you were given, and don't stress so much about the white folk. Go look up what Elijah Muhammad used to say about the clean glass and the dirty glass, and then go be that clean glass.
-
@keepingitreal15 - You can't hate white people for singing the National Anthem. It's a beautiful song. It has passion and emotion and soul and character. It's about a people lifting themselves up from a bad condition and holding out hope for the future. It's a powerful idea, and people can relate to that. The fact that they selected and attempted this song is in itself a sign of respect for the beauty of the song and the idea (and the people) that it represents.

@keepingitreal15 - You really should go read up on your history before you start calling people names. When the "Star Spangled Banner" was written, in 1814 during the middle of slavery, you can argue that it was the American national anthem. But you cannot seriously argue that it was relevant to Black people. Go back and read Frederick Douglass' excellent commentary - "What, to the slave, is the Fourth of July?" The bottom line is that that choir sang the song well, regardless of their color
-
@abigailyork We may not have been slaves but we definitely can RELATE to this song better than those whiteys because we are still a persecuted race to this DAY!!!!!!!! White people don't know anything about persecution, oppression, and blatant discrimination this is bullcrap and 11 idiots agreed with you. If you think this is right you are a clueless moron whoever is white and sings this can kiss my black ass and whoever likes this crap is a idiot that can kiss my black ass as well blks do it betr
-
@DeniseCDNY R u retarded? See this is a racist ass country "We sing their national anthem all the time" IT'S THE AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM! It isn't supposed to be a white national anthem or black national anthem. BUT this racist ass country doesn't consider blacks real citizens and blacks don't even consider ourselves citizens. I hate Eminem but the title of his one song was right "White America" that's what this stolen land has become. @abigailyork I am also offended that they sung OUR anthem
-
Still; my favorite...
-
But let's give credit to this choir. They did a great job with the song. I'm Black, and I don't care that the choir is white. They are GOOD. That's really the bottom line.
-
@cannedshoes - When the "Star Spangled Banner" was written, it was most certainly NOT for everybody. That didn't happen until after roughly 150 years of agitation, fighting, petitioning, social, economic, and moral pressure, and self-awareness. In that spirit of self-awareness, "Lift Every Voice" was written.
I agree that everyone is human, but I would say "their anthem" also when referring to O Canada or La Marseillaise, even though I agree that the French and the Canadians are human too
-
To all Africans Americans who dont like this simply because they are not African american makes no common sense... Im BLACK! and to be honest you should see it as a honor for someone outside of our race to sing it. At one point of time we werent even recognized as a person so be GRATEFUL and SHUT UP!!!
-
@DeniseCDNY What do you mean THEIR anthem? If you mean the American Anthem, that anthem is for EVERYBODY. I hate it when peopel seperate races. Really, everyone's human, so we can't say "it's their song".
-
Great rendition no doubt, this just lacks soul. which is naturally integrated into this song
-
Great job ......should be a universal song ...because we all have had "...weary years and.... silent tears " .respect!!
-
it was okay. it just didn't have power or anything behind it. It lacks only what a soulful church choir can achieve i guess is what i'm getting at.
-
Everytime I listen to this I am amazed... Abigail got vocals! This is my favorite song 4real
-
Honestly, I would download this on iTunes if it were available!
-
@Captainbahamas EVERYBODY isnt prejudice FOOL... that's that same backwards ass attitude that keeps us from progressing...
-
the girl who sings the 3rd solo has the most amazing voice Ive ever heard
-
@jocleantreyduce hey jojo why not? they did a great job so stop hatin just cus there not black!..and stop typing like that it just makes you seem dumb
-
SING ON!!!! :D
-
@Captainbahamas Come on you have to be more open-minded and analyze what is going on they are singing in agreement with our ancestors... That's what they wanted... If you told them a long time ago that one day an all white choir would sing the songs that they wrote they have put you in the crazy house lol this is a great thing!

wtf is this???????????????? 400 years of slavery n they wanna sing our song? do they know how much emotion and pain is behind this song? there isnt even one black person in this choir
Captainbahamas 1 year ago
@Captainbahamas
i don't think anyone who's never been enslaved (including, i presume, you) can understand how much emotion and pain is behind a song like "lift every voice". the point is honoring the history of african americans, not continuing cultural segregation. notice how there isn't a white national anthem. i think it's fine for a group that happens to not have any black members should be welcome to celebrate and honor black history by singing this song.

our school's administration asked us to do it for an assembly... there just aren't that many black kids who sing in our school.
