The health problems that stem from being overweight go way beyond the ones we usually hear about, like diabetes and heart disease. Being overweight can also affect a person's joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. So being overweight can impact a person's entire quality of life.
• Blount's disease. Excess weight on growing bones can lead to this bone deformity of the lower legs.
• Arthritis. Wear and tear on the joints from carrying extra weight can cause this painful joint problem at a young age.
• Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE). Obese children and teens are at greater risk for this painful hip problem.
• Asthma. Obesity is associated with breathing problems that can make it harder to keep up with friends, play sports, or just walk from class to class.
• Sleep apnea. This condition (where a person temporarily stops breathing during sleep) is a serious problem for many overweight kids and adults.
• High blood pressure. When blood pressure is high, the heart must pump harder and the arteries must carry blood that's moving under greater pressure. If the problem continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may no longer work as well as they should.
• High cholesterol. Long before getting sick, obese teens may have abnormal blood lipid levels, including high cholesterol, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, and high triglyceride levels. These increase the risk of heart attack and stroke when a person gets older.
• Gallstones. An accumulation of bile that hardens in the gallbladder forms gallstones.
• Fatty liver. When fat accumulates in the liver, it can cause inflammation, scarring, and permanent liver damage.
• Pseudotumor cerebri. This is a rare cause of severe headaches in obese teens and adults.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Girls who are overweight may miss periods — or not get their periods at all — and may have elevated testosterone (the male hormone) levels in the blood.
• Insulin resistance and diabetes. When there is excess body fat, insulin is less effective at getting glucose, the body's main source of energy, into cells.
• Depression. People who are obese are more likely to be depressed and have lower self-esteem

This is not to poke fun at 'big people'... it's a demonstration and a warning to be aware of the health issues involved.

  • If you look up obesity on Wikipedia, this is the first sentence: "Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems." That's why I made this video...

  • sid348 I'm by no means cookie cutter thin... I've always been ten to fifteen pounds above my 'ideal weight'. That being said, wouldn't you also agree having extreme cases should ease some people's concerns, and they aren't as overweight as some of the people shown. Obesity can cause or aggravate other health issues -that's why it's important. Overweight people SHOULD have scare tactics, especially if they want to live beyond 45.

  • Dr. Phil has some great shows about kids under 15 who are overweight... they risk getting diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, not to mention being an outcast. Kids need a daily balanced diet including fruit and vegetables. Fruit can be sweet enough and attractive... and vegetables can often be more palletable raw, like carrots, tomatoes, cucumber... and sweet potatoes are a great choice. Lean meats an fish are also good, and resist fast food. google Dr. Phil obesity

  • @nightraver

    eat right.... daily...

    exercise ... daily....

it's as simple as that - drastic changes aren't seen right away... it needs to be a commitment to a whole different life, , but the rest of your life might be worth it.

The visual images people who are extreme (and I admit they are extreme) in this should be a warning.

BTW, people tell me regularly if the weight thing comes up in conversation, they may have originally guessed my age to be around 15 years less than what I am.

  • so come up with a diet program video, got motivated !!!

Only thing is i dont have a clue what i have to do anymore. did dieting programs, excercising, crash dieting etc....

i really like to see what you are suggesting to do, what 1000" of other things and programs just didnt do....

  • being overweight SHOULD be disturbing, people should realise how serious it is... especially for kids under age 10 - read the description

  • I do find this disturbing.

  • Fat gotenks lol
