Reporter and author T.R. Reid examines the success of Canada's universal health insurance system, which won over Canadians one province at a time. "I'll bet you next January, there will be bills in 25 state legislators looking for a way to do this," he says of healthcare reform in the United States.

T.R. Reid talks about The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper and Fairer Health Care.

NY Times-bestselling author Reid shows how other industrialized democracies have done something the U.S. can't seem to do: provide healthcare for everybody at a reasonable cost. - Commonwealth Club

T.R. Reid is a former foreign correspondent for The Washington Post, a commentator for National Public Radio and the author of nine books, including three in Japanese. His 10th book, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, was published by Penguin Press in the summer of 2009.

  • Americans doesn't even know what the word "socialist" means. But then again, they haven't figured out that being liberal means that you stand for democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and a free and open market.

  • I think it is time for the real left wings starts to shout a little louder. We don't see this kind of free healthcare's advocate on the main stream media.

  • @GeminiPrimeX Unfortunately the Republicans and the business tycoons of health are misusing the word and the ligand are the new health system.

  • gee, do you think this guy even listens to his own words? using massachusetts and california as examples of states who could lead the country to socialized medicine???

  • @dj4monie neither germany nor canada are nations known for their criminal or freeloader cultures. can you imagine the waiting rooms filled with refuse-to-work types with nothing better to do than suck up the limited resources of a single-payer system?

  • well ...

true to the core , is it not ... at least the Us is tryin´to join the rest of the world !

They do try hard , will they succeed ?

  • What part of Canada spending HALF on healthcare than we do, do you not understand? God damnit, American are fucking idiots.

  • OMG! i TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS GUY!!

    Right On!

  • I'd love to see a Canadian model... universal health care. His facts (mostly timelines) are inaccurate... google "Tommy Douglas" or "Saskatchewan Doctor's Strike" to get more info.

  • So my SS tax would go up ten fold? That sounds like a heck of a deal. Try reading some facts before posting.

  • Canadian system? This is your example? Ok what ever you say. I do think we need cross state health choices. To me this would be all the competition you would need. Government is not a competitor it is a conglomerate.

  • Hold on a second, you wouldn't pay taxes on healthcare in your State if you have Single Payer. You would still pay into SS and some would be taken out of your checks for Medicare, but this would be 90% cheaper than anything you could find in the private sector that you won't care about how much is cost. Unless you fully understand how it works don't comment on it please, I have spent much time in Germany and its better than ours too...
