I am not saying putain is not used as an interjection in french, it is the main use of the word nowadays. Nevertheless, the word putain originally means whore. And you can still use it as such today. An example by the great Brassens who obviously knew his french: listen again to "Le pornographe" and pay particular attention to the moment he sings "Chanter l'amour t'est défendu s'il n'éclôt pas sur le destin d'une putain.""

I don't know if you know any French, but most of us use the word putain as an expression, not necessarily to say whore. when someone is really angry, would say something like "putain the merde" which means sh*t!; if you do use or call someone who is originally from france "putain" they will probably not take too much offense into it
