Because sometimes you just need some simple shiny stuff! The chrome metallic "look" for logos will always be an integral part of graphic design and in this tutorial by Stuart Christensen you will explore a method to create a simple and quick chrome/metallic material for objects and surfaces. This method uses the Envelope Ball and some Noise to create a very realistic shiny metallic texture.

  • Hey Stu... Just wondering... When I go to mt Hardware Texturing and to Textured Channel. It only stays on 'NONE' and doesn't offer me any other choices in the drop down menu. Followed everything... Built your starship and wanted to add this chrome look but can't get 'reflected color' to drop down in that menu choice...

  • @VladthePainter I'm not sure about the question.....I'll check the tutorial and get back.!

  • love your tutorial.. one quick question: how did you create the "6 "number.. can you explain the technique?

    appreciate a lot,, thanks..:D

  • @susilo297 I used the actual logo from Line 6. Check out my tutorial on importing Illustrator files and extruding them in Maya. The tutorial covers the use of the bevel tool and how to take an existing Illustrator Logo file and work with it in Maya. Best of Luck! STU

  • Everytime i try to render it i get an error "graphics card capabilities r insufficient 4 rendering" I have an NVIDIA Ge Force 9600 GT card. What should i do?

  • @PriyankaKashib

I'm not quite sure...try rendering as a Maya Software Render, then try Maya Hardware Render and then try Mental Ray. If it does not render at all with any of these options I'm really not sure what the problem would be. Let me know more if you can't get it working. STU

  • Hey. I have the same problem - no choices in drop down menu. Maybe you have a solution?

  • Stuart again another great tutorial...tks man!

  • @VladthePainter Its a Bug that happens when you change the name of the Material, Save and reload Maya will fix it.

  • Oh and anyone looking for a dull sort of chrome material, you can change the shaders of the your mesh/model, also smooth shading seems to get a more reflective surface!

  • thankyou very much

  • Great tutorial, man!
