McCarthy only targeted loyalty risks within the US government and working for certain defense contractors, where security clearance was required. He was not a prosecutor.
The question was whether the person could be trusted with classified information. So "innocent until proven guilty" is an absurd standard. Will you at least admit that Truman and the Democrats who opposed McCarthy were wrong because they trusted Soviet spies with sensitive intel after being warned?

@dragknuckle You may watch history but I read history and it is clear that McCarthy was reckless and sloppy in his approach to communism.
His method- basically throwing things and trying to make them stick to people- was unstructured and improvised.
Apparently innocent until proven guilty means nothing to you.
Also, your final point makes no sense, anti-communism MADE McCarthy's career-he was an unknown Senator before he latched onto the issue. What ended his career was his stupidity.

You are just accepting the official Hollywood version of history. McCarthy did not "find a commie under every bed." He diligently probed to find the extent to which Stalin had placed operatives in strategic parts of the US government. While it is true that not every single person he questioned was a spy, that is true of any investigation. The police question innocent people every day in order to eliminate them as suspects.
And anti-communism ENDED his career it didn't help.

However, if you look at the history, you will find that drunken idiots like McCarthy did more harm than good because of his scattershot, find-a-commie-under-every-bed approach.
I read enough recent history on this subject to know that McCarthy used communism for political ends primarily.
As for his drinking, goes to credibility. Basically the man was an embarassing lush and a disgrace.

Mc Carthy was a crude alcoholic who used communism for his own political ends.
He had little to no credibility within his own party.
Eisenhower couldn't stand him-and he was a Republican.
McCarthy was foolish enough to believe that he had enough power to take on anybody and took on the Army.
Beck is another McCarthy which is why he likes him.
The difference is that Beck is only a tv host not a Senator.
Beck is a white supremacist/theocrat who wants another witchhunt to take place in US.

Communist spies? 1963, cold war, Soviet Union.... all this comes from misunderstanding. He really should went rather to school in his 13 than to radio. You know, you should be spared of hearing such a non-sense.
He clearly does not know what Marxism is. In Russia today, well, they have not ever experienced democracy. I believe they are trying, but they do not have any experience. Young people are different, but there are old people who decide and they only know how to behave in communism.
