It is believed that swirling the contents in the glass aerates the wine which softens the Tannic quality of the wine. However, some say it doesn't make a difference.

Tannins are astringent chemicals that give a dry mouth-puckering affect to our mouths. By allowing wine to aerate for a moment, the tannins are "softened", allowing the wine to be more enjoyable to a broader range of people.

Some people do not like Red Wine due to its mouth-puckering characteristics. If you wait a moment and allow the wine to aerate, you might end up liking it after all. =)
