This part 1 of my live footage of Hurricane Charley which struck the southwest Florida peninsula on Friday, August 13, 2004. Charley came in and the National Hurricane Center in Miami forecasted the storm to move north and make landfall in the Tampa Bay area. However, as with other hurricanes, they seem to have a mind of their own and Charley was no exception. Charley made a turn and was moving toward Sanibel Island near Fort Myers and then veered away at the last minute, but still caused extensive damage in Lee County, including Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, Pine Island, Fort Myers Beach, Cape Coral, Fort Myers and the communities to the south of Fort Myers all the way down to almost Naples. Official landfall came at 3:45 p.m. EDT near the island of Cayo Costa, Florida. However, the worst damage caused by the storm occurred in Charlotte County, which include the cities of Punta Gorda, which was especially hard hit, Charlotte Harbor and Port Charlotte. Charley moved up the peninsula and continued to cause extensive damage in parts of De Soto, including the city of Arcadia, Hardee, Highlands, Polk, Osceola, Orange (the greater Orlando metro area), Seminole, Brevard, and Volusia counties, before it moved offshore in the Daytona Beach area. Charley was a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph when it made landfall in Lee and Charlotte Counties. Unfortunately, Charley wasn't the only hurricane to impact the state of Florida that year. Florida was also impacted by Hurricanes Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. Florida would be impacted by three more hurricanes the following season in 2005; Dennis, Katrina and Wilma.

  • I am remembering the 5-year aniversary today.

  • I live in Polk County, It came right over me... All the trees fell on top of the lines, Sparks all across the yard. Everything in the house started smoking and going crazy... It was intense...

  • Bet that was scary. Where do you live in Polk County? I used to live in Lakeland a long time ago.

  • I live in Lakeland, That year we had three come over us all in the same month... I have always lived down here and haven't had another one sense. I love storms, Even though it's bad news for some (Never wish anything to happen to anyone) But I enjoy the extreme weather...

  • You also had Frances and Jeanne that year. Have you heard of Mulberry, just south of town? And, do you live north or south of the Polk Parkway? You have lightning, thunderstorms about this time of year, about every afternoon around 3 or 4?

  • I lived in Tampa(still do)and basicly all we were hearing is gtfo from everyone. Literally everyone in my area evacuated, literally no cars on the road the day of the landfall. I never listened to meteorolagists after this. Look at ts fay this year. Again We were supposed to get hit by it, but nothing

  • @bommchacalaka Hurricanes are unpredictable and known for their unpredictability. Weather is not an exact science.
