@AleXy86 Just wanted to return with something I spotted in the Rift patch notes: "Re-fixed Wine compatibility with RIFT." Yes -- we now have three of the largest MMOs working specifically on Wine compatibility (WoW's Warden anti-cheat detects Wine and adapts so as to not break each other, and WoW was being designed for Linux too in the early betas but they settled on keeping Wine working unofficially) (EVE Online works on Wine compatibility, and for a short while even offered a native binary).

@Ranguvar13 It's much better for SOME 0-day releases, but far from it to see that in general. Sure. Windows is not only "big" because of that. There a bunch of reasons why it is that way. I do not get in to OS fights or what's better and what is not. That is left for everyones own, personal taste to decide. I know why - I - think Windows is the better choice for home-use (in general, for mainstream), but I also know why - I - like Linux. I do not forsee the future @ about the fail thingy.

@Ranguvar13 It's no prob. Just post some screenies for comparison and that's it. I am interested in this as well, because every single person who has claimed, that had better performance und Wine then on Windows (identical settings), I have been able to prove wrong.

@Ranguvar13 Yeah, about Rift, that's one in how many cases? You could also say it was good luck, that the tech behind it is covered by Wine stable. I can give you the opposite of that, with Age of Conan (for example). If you want more examples, I can give you a few dozend, that I have tried out over the past few months. I will look in to that issue you said about the disconnect in WoW. I still play WoW and have never, ever had that issue in combination with the situation you mentioned.

@AleXy86 Why do I have so much faith in Wine? It's so much better with 0-day releases now, and Windows is big because of all the applications tied to it. If all those programs were to be liberated through Wine? Microsoft would be forced to compete vs. Linux and OS X (because by that point Apple geeks and coders would be dying to get it working 100% on Mac) based solely on the OS, not based on the applications that only work there. And they would fail.
-
@AleXy86 Long-term of course not, but you'll forgive companies like EVE instead working with Wine to develop a fake-native application. It's a step.
I'm not going to do a detailed benchmark -- sorry, used up too much time on this talking :p Yeah, perhaps I'm a liar and such -- I'm not, I know my situation is not usual and most games are faster in Windows, etc.
-
As I said before, forget tweaking and hoping -- a high-end 3D DirectX internet-based video game was playable on Wine on _Day_ _One_. No hacks needed. It will only get better from here.
For the disconnect, there's a million threads, google something like "wow alt tab disconnect loading 64-bit" or something. Check the 4.1.0 patch notes for a note saying it was fixed (again, wasn't, at least for me).
Guess it's cheating, but I use this patch (I use a quad core): bit[DOT]ly[SLASH]j13R2H

@Ranguvar13 Like I said in my last post. But this already has been done (see Cedega for that) and has proven to be a lot slower (90% of the case) and often buggy, including missing features (graphics, sound - bugs). Now, if you talk about the most actual and recent Wine, like I said, then yes, it would be the most cheapest and easiest way to ports stuff (like I said), but also the slowest. I honestly think this is not the way to go. I do respect the ppl using this method, though.
-
@Ranguvar13 Also, yes, it's faster then it was before, of course, it would be sad if it wouldn't be the case, but it still can, does not have to be (will be in most cases though), a lot of fiddeling around and tweaking plus testing and hoping.
-
@Ranguvar13 Okay, it's faster? How much and under the SAME, identical settings (resolution, details, etc.)? Fine, proove it. Show me some screenshot comparisons. I tested this SO much (advocate for Crossover and using Winehq for years) and have never seen ANY game be faster under Wine. I do not know that bug you mentioned from WoW. Could you point out a thread to it? About Rift, yes, that's one that I'll let through. Even so if the performance is way under Windows, it really runs good (Gold).
