Several yakuza clans are in a
relentless struggle to gain control
of the Japanese underworld.
The competing mob bosses use
every possible method of intrigue
to expand their empires, and loyalty
is affirmed over saké. Otomo, a longtime
Yakuza member, sees his chance
to break through the ranks of pawns
and ruffians, and become a major
player on the stock market. This sets
off an endless struggle that can only
end with either the acquisition of
absolute power or death, in a corrupt
world where there is no room for
heroes, but only constant betrayal
and revenge.

"Japan is probably the only country
in the world where a criminal organization
such as the Yakuza has their
own billboards displayed on their
buildings. The film's main characters
are motivated by greed and malice.
It is a bold and harsh reality. But it
is strange that while the film shows
everyday life of Yakuza, as the end
of the story approaches, more and
more comic elements surface."
(Takeshi Kitano)

Takeshi Kitano (b. Tokyo, 1947) started out in
theatre in the 1970s and subsequently worked
his way up to becoming one of Japan's
best regarded actors. Under the pseudonym
"Beat Takeshi", he has also enjoyed success
as a sports commentator, critic, writer and
lyricist. To Western audiences he is wellremembered
for his performance in Nagisa
Osima's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"
(1983). He made his directorial debut in 1989
and was honoured with the Golden Lion for
"Fireworks" at the 1997 Venice FF. In 2003, his
"Samurai" earned him four prizes at Venice,
among them Best Director.

Jointly released in Singapore by Cathay-Keris Films Pte Ltd and Lighthouse Pictures.

Beat Takeshi is to Yakuza flicks what Toshirō Mifune was to samurai epics.

I rented this movie and I think it's well made. I was looking for a movie about the Yakuza instead of the Italian-American mafia. But it's all the same, I think. It's just in Japan instead of New York, Chicago, or somewhere in Sicily. Or even Russia.
