Do you start them in ico or full rich? I have one on a stand that seems to flood, but it then it coughs to life. The primer has a jet in the inlet to the carb, but fuel looks like it comes out the fuel feed valve too during priming. I crank with it rich, tickle the primer, it fires a couple of times, then stops firing. I turn the boost pump off, crank a bit and then it starts. Any ideas?
There is a great story of a F-105 pilot jumping into a T-29 (USAF training version of the 240) and having to work it out himself. Very funny story, in Ed Rasimus' book "Cobra Palace".
use to go to Roanoke airport in the 50's to watch planes. American flew convair 240s, Eastern Martin 404's and Piedmont DC-3s. Watching them start those radials was so exciting to me. I later found out the Convair and Martin had the same engine. P&W RA2800 wasp. Sometimes they would backfire while trying to start. It sounded like a shotgun.
hey dude..that noise they make when they start, when you stop priming and kick in the mixture..like they let go before they kick in...love it.. I didnt get the start on my video, but yours is a truly good example..
Hi, Tlfrantz1. I'd always start in ICO. Get it running with the primer, then
go to auto rich, and auto lean when the rpm drops.
