Video taken from the payload of my first weather balloon project. The payload was a small foam polystyrene box loaded with camcorder, stills camera and tracking equipment. It was attached to a parachute and a helium weather balloon, ascending to 98,810 feet (over 30,000 metres, classed as "near space" and part of the stratosphere) before the balloon burst as predicted and the payload fell by parachute.

The balloon is supposed to shred into many pieces, however in this case more than half of the balloon did not shred and remained attached to the parachute, deforming it and increasing the total weight by 30%. So the descent was wild and rather fast!

Check my other videos for the launch, floating in near space, and the landing.

The annoying whistle is the piezo sounder used to help find the package when it landed.

  • what were those white dots at the beginning?

  • found this by chance... in the future would it not make sense to attach 2 or 3 small partially (barely) inflated air balloons to serve as a {tail} or stabilizer to keep the camera more stable ? Maybe attach them just below the helium balloon . just a though ..

  • Incredible how high it got, wonderful shots!!!!
